Letter to My Father

First Person Dance Company

A biographical work drawing on the stories of the performers in relation to their fathers. The starting point was Franz Kafka’s work – Letter to His Father. The piece cut between two spoken texts with the choreography serving as a subtext. It was simply staged with two chairs and a suspended mailbag full of letters which was released at the end of the piece.

Letter to My Father signified the beginning of Maxine’s interest in the cinematic – in particular the layering of multiple narratives. Robert Altman’s film Short Cuts was a key influence.
